From Past to Present

Panagia Phaneromeni Ayvalık Ayazması The Story

With the aim of sharing Ayvalık’s rich historical and cultural heritage with present and future generations, a project to restore Panagia Phaneromeni Ayvalık Ayazması was initiated with the contributions of those devoted to Ayvalık and in cooperation with Ayvalık Municipality.

This healing water center, which had served the people of Ayvalık and the entire Gulf region since the 1800s, was later converted into a small olive oil factory and lost its original function.

By the late 1970s, the factory had ceased operating and the building was abandoned and left to deteriorate. By 2015, even its roof was on the verge of collapse.

To restore this remarkable structure to its original form, archaeologist Prof. Dr. Ömer Özyiğit and his wife, architect and restorer Suzan Özyiğit, worked together on the project. Following 15 months of intensive work by this distinguished restoration team, Panagia Phaneromeni Ayvalık Ayazması was brought back to life as a museum for future generations.
